This necklace holds a silver butterfly, handmade from layers of thick sterling silver and inlayed with resin and crushed Victorian red brick.
A talisman of strength and surrender amidst transformation.
I make all of my sterling silver sheet in-studio by recycling sterling silver scrap and rolling it into sheet and wire with a rolling mill. A lengthy process of transformation and care that results in a meaningful, ethical piece of jewellery. I found the red brick locally in my old railway town and crushed it to make pigment for watercolour, which then gave me the idea of using it to create a deep, natural red colour for this Butterfly. Nothing comes from nowhere... our bricks, walls, cities and towns are all created and paved with the Earth, just like ourselves. Our driveways are paved with stone gravel from our mountains and rivers and tarmacked with our ancient ancestors. Anything man-made is earth-made as we, ourselves, are earth-made. Our eyes come from the earth and so is it not through our eyes that the Earth sees itself...? Is anything ever destroyed in this universe or just... drastically transformed? Perhaps the sense of loss we feel makes the point invalid either way. Who knows. I do not. I just make shiny things with the hands the earth gave me and wonder...
