The broomstick is a symbol of power, creation, balance, and new beginnings. In traditional pagan ceremonies a person will leap over a broomstick as a symbol of stepping over the threshold into a new way of being, of sweeping away the old, and inviting in the new. A couple may do this together at their handfasting (ceremonial pagan wedding ceremony) or a person may do it alone as part of a blessing or rite of passage.
